Dump the chops of Fountains of Wayne/Ivy’s Adam Schlesinger in a bowl with grown-up teen idol Taylor Hanson (of Hanson, duh), the unassuming presence and guitar muscle of Smashing Pumpkins’ James Iha and the rock pedigree of Cheap Trick drummer Bun Carlos, mix it up, and enjoy Tinted Windows (plus a mouthful of cavities and a sugar crash in about an hour). I hesitate to use the term “supergroup”, but in terms of power pop, Tinted Windows makes a strong case for earning that label with this self-titled release. It’s all of the cliches it should be: driving with the windows down, a summer day on the beach, the soundtrack to a teen romantic comedy - and in 20 years you’ll probably hear a mutated version as a jingle for Hidden Valley Ranch dressing or something equally mundane. The point is this: this album is a strong jolt of feel-goodness polished to a high sheen. The band doesn’t apologize for it. It’s good stuff. Totally harmless.
