With most bands finding genres in sub-genres, the Martyrs? from LA have a single mind set to make Rock and Roll music. This is only a good thing, and while the group may channel crosses of Jet?, Wolfmother? and Oasis at first listen to song like Sweet Girl, for this reviewer, the pleasant reminders of Marc Bolan of T-Rex were a notice of how pure rock can be when left in the hands of an able trio of musicians. Mining a new sound that never fades from the years of 1972 can be challenging, but here on their self-titled record the Martyrs?' great songwriting and ability to change gears into a country folk delivery with Led Zeppelin III sounds on tracks like Humming Bird are impressive. Recommended.
