This scruffy, quintet of Arizona longhairs, What Laura Says, might reference their own music as “snoo-gaze” but truth is that the tunes on their sophomore longplayer Bloom Cheek (out June 8th) twirl between oozing psychadelia and backroom lo-fi lounge pop (Rhodes-soaked of course). One of this effort’s easiest references might be pair it with the growing ‘Appalachian’ folk fog sound (harking to Fleet Foxes, Woods or even Devendra Banhart’s swoon) that are evident on openers like “On The Fence” and “Bloom Cheek,” but as the record progresses, it moves into a safer place: Wilson-brother harmonies paired with serene strumming, piano rolls and a general feeling that this music should fit perfect with your next Sunday afternoon. The band has shared the stage with the likes of Dr. Dog, My Morning Jacket, Lou Reed, Yo La Tengo, MGMT, Yeasayer, Delta Spirit and White Rabbits to name a few.
