They’re playing a few shows with the Mystery Jets in September, but you can rest assured that as long as their opening set is less than 15 minutes long, San Francisco-based duo, Dominant Legs, will be stealing the show. Their debut EP – Young In Love and Life – just dropped on Lefse Records and is a quarter-hours worth of feel good pop that (depending on your level of sobriety) will either have you foot tapping, or dancing in circles.
The band is comprised of GIRLS guitarist, Ryan Lynch, and Hannah Hunt. While this EP does share some of the enthusiasm of GIRLS’ “Lust For Life”, Lynch makes the Dominant Legs sound distinct by ditching some of the lo-fi-ness of his other band for a more fleshed out, crystal clear dynamic. Hunt’s airy vocals are perfectly mixed to complement Lynch’s distinct tenor and everything from the synthesizers to the auxiliary percussion are audible within the songs’ many layers. “Clawing Out at the Walls” and “Run Like Hell for Leather” make good use of simple acoustic strumming but it’s “About My Girls” and “Young In Love and Life” that should define Dominant Legs.
The former features the EP’s best harmonies and the first three seconds of the title track kick off with a drum machine that sounds straight out of Queens, N.Y. in the 1980s. Hell, you might even look at your iPod to see if you accidently queued up Run-D.M.C.’s King of Rock. The song’s funky upstrokes and feel-good harmonies are upbeat, jangly, and joyous. Hunt’s “oohs” and “ahhs” are super-dreamy and the two-minute song finds Lynch delivering the line “I was feeling something good as soon as you arrived.” When Young In Love and Life'' comes to its abrupt end, it’s that sentiment that perfectly describes how this little aural appetizer makes you feel.
