Tempus Projects is pleased to present a solo exhibition of works on paper by the artist Julie Weitz. Weitz combines painting, drawing, and collage to addresses the complex and entangled ways in which we picture others and ourselves. For this exhibition, she usurps traditional notions of portraiture, imagining the form of the head as a sequence of pulsating lines, rhythmically arranged in black and fluorescent yellow and nearly indistinguishable from its background. Circular cutout forms with delicate drawings of hypnotic patterns stand in as eyes. Intentionally disruptive, Weitz employs optical effects that seize the viewer’s attention and direct it towards a single point of focus. With these new works, she probes the threshold between visibility and invisibility, as the mask or persona that we call ourselves becomes optically elusive, unpredictably simple and strangely mesmerizing.
Julie Weitz was born in Chicago, IL in 1979 and currently lives and works in Tampa, Florida. She is a 2010 recipient of the West Prize awarded by the West Collection. Weitz has shown nationally at Patricia Sweetow Gallery, San Francisco, CA, Schroeder Romero, New York, NY, Thomas Robertello Gallery, Chicago, IL and Marine Contemporary Art Salon, Santa Monica, CA. Her work has been featured on the cover of New American Painting and has been reviewed in the Philadelphia Inquirer, Artweek, and Creative Loafing.
In the courtyard for one night only, purchase or peruse unique goods from Zen Lily, Audry Garber, Julie Dye Designs, Mark Noll, Lesley Stuart Tinnaro and Scott Diaz. Also view selected works from Daniel Mantilla.
