Stanton Moore is undeniably one of the hardest working drummers in the game. One of the founding members of the famed NOLA funk band, Galactic, Moore has spent the last 15 years touring with his beloved jam band over 200 days out of the year. The Clark Kent of drummers, he somehow has found the time to front three amazing bands; Galactic, Stanton Moore Trio and Grage A Trois. As well as spearheading commendable charities with his wife Aletta, and now also producing.
Moore took a few minutes out of his crazy schedule to talk to REAX about how exactly he balances his ever revolving door of endeavors. The drummer extraordinaire is getting ready to hit the road with his beloved trio, this time featuring Grammy winning singer/songwriter Anders Osborne. The act will be at Crowbar in Ybor City on Saturday, October 23rd.
REAX: Okay, so you have literally got your hands in just about everything. Three bands, a charity, producing Anders Osborne's new album. How do you balance and prioritize all these things and which projects hold presence over others? Does Galactic always come first?
MOORE: Yeah I think it's safe to say Galactic typically comes first and I usually try to fill in everything else around those holes. I'll find out when I have availability off from Galactic and fill in everything else around that.
REAX: Galactic has been heavily touring for over a decade now. Do you think you guys will eventually let up on the touring to pursue other interests such as side projects, charities, families, etc?
MOORE: We are actually in our 15th year of touring which is pretty crazy. I think the goal eventually may be to spend a little less time touring to pursue other things, such as time in the studio. We've been staying really active in the studio, working on our next project, working on stuff with Chali 2Na. When I'm out on the road, those guys are putting even more work in the studio. So yeah we are all really busy and I think the goal for Galactic is to keep touring but just not all the time.
REAX: You are involved in a ton of charities. I read that You and your wife Aletta started the Staletta fund, a scholarship that helps cover funds for young musicians to attend jazz camps, auditions and to further their education. How did the idea for the scholarship come about?
MOORE: Well Aletta had always wanted to do a benefit of some sort to tie in with our wedding. At the time I was involved in a music workshop for kids. We would see all these kids doing great and getting scholarships to various schools or jazz camps, which was great, but then come to find out they couldn't figure out how to pay for plane tickets to get there, or for the extra expenses to be there. We saw a serious need there so we started the scholarship fund to help pay for some of the expenses for these kids, it's been a great experience.
REAX: Amongst the constant touring and recording, you are in the midst of producing a new album for Anders Osbourne, who is also on tour with the trio right now. Is this your first time producing an album that is not your own? How did that come about and what has the process been like of producing the album?
MOORE: I've been producing my own stuff for while now, as well as the first record for the Greyhounds along with Robert Mercurio. So I've been doing this for a little while. Anders and I had talked about working together for quite some time. Years ago we talked about being able to work on an album together and then to tour together on it. So that's what we set ourselves up to be able to do and thankfully it has worked.
REAX: The revolving door of world renowned musicians that you have played with is pretty impressive. How did you settle on the current lineup of Robert Walter and Will Bernard?
MOORE: Well that all started for lack of a better word from a superjam. I was working on a project called Equinox, which featured me, Robert Mercurio on bass, Will Bernard, Robert Walter and Donald Harrison. So during this time was when I started thinking about putting together my own trio. After playing with Will and Robert I realized those guys would make for an incredible trio and it has worked out really well ever since. I knew I wanted a trio that we could all sit down and write a lot together, which those guys are great at. I knew right after this project that I wanted them in.
REAX: That brings me to my next question. I was going to ask if you do most of the song writing for the trio but it sounds like that is pretty divided? What is that process like of song writing for you guys?
MOORE: Yeah exactly, song writing is very divided among us. Although, lately I've been touring so much that I haven't had too much time to write. I've been trying to get back into it but that is the great thing about Robert and Will is that they can both contribute and write and come out with really solid material for us to play, which is great.
REAX: Is there any fresh, young talent who have really grabbed your attention as of lately?
MOORE: You know to be honest I've been so busy touring and in the studio that I really haven't had time to scout out anything new as of lately.
REAX: What's next for Stanton Moore? Any new side projects in the works? Or maybe more producing?
MOORE: Yeah, I'll be producing Anders Osborne's next record and also will be going into the studio with Garage A Trois, which is Mike Dillon, Skerik, and Marc Benevento in January. Once that is done we will be touring in the holes of Galactic for that new album. There's so much going on, it's great.
