Los Angeles noisemaking duo, No Age, invaded your sonic consciousness when they released their Sub Pop debut – Nouns – almost two years ago, but they’ve clearly set out to renew the lease on your eardrums with their latest LP, Everything In Between. Drummer, Dean Spunt, recently said that his band’s newest record “doesn’t sound like a lo-fi pop record – it just sounds like awesome,” but after just couple of listens, his statement doesn’t actually ring true.
Everything In Between does, in fact, sound lo-fi, but that doesn’t mean it’s not awesome. Over nearly 40 minutes, Spunt and guitarist Randy Randall present the listener with 13 tracks that run the gamut from manic pop songs (“Fever Dreaming”) to sample-heavy sing-along anthems (“Life Prowler”). They even toss in a few subdued instrumentals (“Katerpillar,” “Dusted,” “Postive Amputation”) to boot.
Where the duo had the volume turned up to ten on Nouns, they allow themselves to slow (and turn it) down at least once on Everything In Between. “Common Heat” is built around a joyous acoustic guitar riff, and the boys’ baritone/tenor vocal harmonies reveal themselves after a few careful listens. The track benefits from a swirling sound bed provided by F. Bermudez, who helps the band add more textured samples to their already nuanced sound.
Nowhere is Bermudez’ contribution more prevalent then on “Positive Amputation.” The nearly three-minute instrumental is a soothing blend of static feedback and distortion that sounds amazing juxtaposed to the mellow piano chords that sit front and center in the mix. While the instrumentals on the album are a welcome peek into what No Age is capable of, the band still sounds the best when they’re fast and loud.
Tracks like “Glitter,” “Depletion,” and album highlight, “Shred and Transcend” are welcome updates to the frantic noise fans have come to know and love. The latter opens with a subdued, distorted guitar, but proceeds to explode into a mostly instrumental sonic cocktail of hyper-speed drumming and chugging guitar turned up as loud as it will seemingly go. The track – just like the best parts of the album – is an aural assault that will leave your ears ringing, but begging for more.
