Start Today #1
Ahhhh, can you smell it? The new day? The new year? The new new?
About 10 years ago a good friend of mine, Vince, wrote a personal manifest to live by, and after re-reading it, the statement is still relevant today. So, with the beginning of this new column, and a new year, and new decade in mind, I’d like to repeat and endorse the following:
“To the people of all nations,
We propose a concept of friendliness...on giving instead of taking... on considering others before yourself... on helping and asking nothing in return.
We, the “common”, “simple”, “little” people are a million and one things. We are big, and we are small. We are simple, and we are wise. We have existed before time began, and throughout history we have overcome the impossible and accomplished the supernatural. Let us not forget we built the pyramids, and pulled the oars for Roman emperors. We sailed the boats for Columbus. We fought on many battlefields and protested many unjust wars. We built up and tore down the Berlin wall, and marched with Martin Luther King. We went to the moon and back again.
We are the people the ads are written for. The people everyone is selling things to. We are the world’s greatest joke, and the world’s greatest strength. We are the majority. We raise the crops, we dig the mines and we work the factories. We fly the planes, keep the books and drive the buses.
But greater than all of this, we are a family. We, together, are capable of greatness. Together the extraordinary is possible.
So tear down the fences that separate you. Look up your neighbor, they are most important. You are going to need them, and they are going to need you. Read this again, spread the word and take a closer look, because you my friend are far more than you think you are.
Be a better neighbor.”
One addendum to the above… Start Today.
