The Prinzo Report: Radiohead Show Review

Posted Thursday, May 8th 2008 by John Prinzo

(Ed. note: Ouch!  Looks like Stephanie Bolling wasn't the only one unenamoured with the accoustics at Ford Ampitheater.)

Show: Great. Venue: Shitty.

One of the best things a Radiohead show is the amazing vibe they give off.  Warm and hypnotic, it envelops the crowd.  Clapping in unison emanates organically without cues or direction at last Tuesday’s show with songs like "Everything" and the finale, "House of Cards."  These moments at Ford Ampitheater felt like a festival and not a single show.  Part of the reason for criticism about the sedate crowd was not so much because of apathy on the part of the audience but because they were entranced by the captivating music and stellar light show.  Nine Inch Nails and to a lesser extent the Smashing Pumpkins were the last amazing light shows I witnessed.  Radiohead blew them all away.  It was a visual spectacle throughout the show but I think 40 people simultaneously had a seizure during the LED light vortex that was "National Anthem."

That being said, the venue sucks.  I sat in the last row of chairs to the far right (maybe several rows behind Stephanie).  First off, it is the quietest venue I've ever been to.  Only there does one not have to compete with the music to have a conversation.  Conversation itself actually drowns out the music.  Good thing the audience was mostly captivated.  And, this being Tampa, a burned-out drunk chick next to me, forever stuck in the early 90's complained incessantly that they were not playing old stuff.  She then continued to belt out verses which are almost impossible for the average person to sing out loud ("Yesterday, I woke up suckin' a lemon"), albeit in a scratchy Pat Benatar way.

On top of that, directly behind this side of the seats, a giant, stadium flood light poured into our section altering the experience immensely.  The same area on the opposite side was veiled in darkness.  In a final effort to shield the citizens that populate the area around Ford Ampitheatre from the four hours of music a month they might barely hear, a wall was built to mute sound outside.  By the way, this wall also serves as a giant echo chamber bouncing delayed sound back at the audience muddling the mix.

I know Radiohead isn't Slayer or AC/DC, so ear-shattering volume is not a priority.  I've now seen them at Coachella, Bonnaroo, Lakewood, West Palm, but Ford was by far the quietest.  Lame.

Ed. note 2: Here is one of Prinzo's videos.  I guess I would be upset with the venue too if this is what I heard:

i've got to disagree w/ T; i've done the lawn at FA, and while it IS a chill atmosphere, don't expect to actually hear the band you paid to see

We were sitting close to the front, at the back of the normally general admission section, and it sounded and looked beautiful. There was also a haze of Nag Champa in the air every time the fog machines went off.

I have been further back in the past, as well as closer even to the action, and the sound changes drastically depending on where you are located.

FA is actually my least favorite larger local venue, almost in a tie with the St. Pete Times Forum and the shitty echo that you can't escape. But FA loses extra points for being outdoors, which in the summer is such crap. Luckily the weather was perfect for Radiohead.

Good points, T

I also think the Amp suffers from poor planning and the deal they struck with Hills. County EPA over noise ordinance violations, hence "Prinzo's Echo Chamber" wall they built on the east lawn.

But, thanks for the lawn tip. I did not know the sound gets better the higher up you go. I will definitely have to try that next show I go to. Save $$ too :-)

Painstakingly, I have learned the intricacies of this venue, and it is not lightly that I say that this could be the best lawn of any venue I've ever been to (and there have been many.) Some background first. I've been to about 20 shows at this venue. It wasn't until last month's Santana show that I'd ever ventured up to the lawn. In some cases (undersold shows) they have actually closed off the lawn and made the 300 level seats Gen Ad. While saving cleanup man hours, I now know that this is a tragic happening. Anyway, in my previous dozen and a half shows, I have had seats everywhere in that shed. 2nd row, left side, right side, close, far, last row of seats, mid way, etc. The only place for decent sound is in the alley facing the stage. Of course, these are the VIP seats, which often go unused. The closer one gets to the sides, the worse the sound gets, with a distinct drop-off point about midway b/w the alley and the edge. The view and sound from the lawn are much different, however. We had good seats for Radiohead Tuesday, but after about 4 songs, my wife and I looked at each other, rolled our eyes, and headed for the lawn. the Top of the lawn, in fact. Simply put, it rules up there. It's like being at home, watching the concert in your backyard. The sound is stellar, and there is an optical illusion that eliminates the entire 300 level from your view. The sound wall? No problem, and a welcome addition, in fact, to keep out highway noise. At Santana, I stood in front of that thing facing away from the stage, and the sound was a crisp, clear, gigantic wall of sound. No echo at all. (It is lined with thick sound absorbing mattting, btw.)

Suffice to say, I will never buy seats at this venue again, and I will go to more concerts there now b/c the lawn is so good. You can even bring chairs and a cooler with you to the grass! (check the website for specifics.) Try it up there next time. Pick a side, half way b/w the video screen and the edge, stay close to the top, sit down and relax....or go crazy. YOu'll have plenty of room.

It should also be noted that Tampa has waited a loooonnnnggg time for a big outdoor venue like Ford Amp. There are many more tours stopping here now. So, although it's not perfect, I think most would agree they are happy to have it.

correction

This video is actually from West Palm Beach. It is a bit farther than my videos from Tampa and actually sounds a bit better.
