On Being Broken in Half...

Posted Friday, March 7th 2008 by James Ferreira
As alluded to in my previous post, the past six months have not been kind to this old gent, but music can have amazing healing properties...Last night I was fortunate enough to catch Built to Spill at the State Theater in St. Petersburg, and it was fucking incredible...BTS has been one of my favorite bands since I graduated high school, and I had previously never had the pleasure of catching them live...They did not disappoint, and even though much of their music (especially the stuff off their latest album, You in Reverse) breeds painful nostalgia of my tormentor, the experience was rather cathartic.... Finding yourself is the most important step towards any recovery, and the honesty that was present in (lead singer) Doug Martsch's voice last night was breathtaking....Recently, I've spent a lot of time in hiding and passed on many shows as I tried to figure out exactly what was most important to me...Last night went miles and beyond for this specific journey.... Music can set you free, and help you understand how to let go of everything that you fear to lose...I've actually had quite a few life changing experiences at the State Theater, believe it or not, and the performance their on Thursday night was definitely another one to add to the list... I'll be seeing you all at the bars again real soon kids....Maybe even smiling again...
