This aptly yet misleadingly named release – there is indeed a coloring book, and crayons, but it's actually an EP – comes from two of the dudes in metalcore act Chiodos. Its above-average emo-pop tunes are, obviously, worlds away from Chiodos' jagged bludgeonage; evocative piano lines and strains of acoustic guitar delicately buttress these hook-laden, innately melodic tunes. On the other hand, a few personal touches aside, Cinematic Sunrise doesn't sound too different from the dozens of bands who've bolstered pained, plaintive vocals with trebly, metallic guitars and kick-ass drumming in the name of resonating with heartbroken kids everywhere. Still, it's put together extremely well; the urgent, cascading piano lines are a particularly nice addition to a style desperately in need of new angles. – Scott Harrell
