Am I missing something? Owen Pallett has all the right hipster credentials – I should, theoretically, be totally into this. His guest spots, arranging and scoring credits alone (Arcade Fire, Grizzly Bear and The Mountain Goats to name a few) put him in the small pocket of space reserved for indie geniuses. But I have a really hard time getting behind savant concept albums. Heartland “concerns a young, ultra-violent farmer named Lewis and a supreme diety named Owen”. Oh-kay. I will give Pallett props for his musical finesse - layers upon layers of sounds built up into complex arrangements. And his voice is oh-so-soothing. But beyond that, I am not convinced. Give me a four/four pop song and I'm a happy girl. Heartland requires too much thinking.
