Austin, TX is fertile ground for all things psyhe and fuzzy, and Diagonals are certainly no exception. Borrowing heavily from Death Valley 69 era Sonic Youth, 60's garage no-hit wonders, early Stones, and the 13th Floor Elevators, Valley Of The Cyclops is like a lazy Sunday afternoon on half a hit of acid; hazy, a tad out of focus, just enough to fuck things up a bit. The stand out element here is Steve Garcia's vocals, all flat and disinterested, mixed lowly over the raucous guitar and 4/4 drum work. One reviewer wrote that Valley...sounds like the soundtrack to a Quentin Tarentino film, particularly the Austin based Deathproof. Couldn't agree more. And, those scorching organ moments, like in Summer In Shadows? Wiley Wiggins. Dazed & Confused's Mitch Kramer himself. How Austin is that?
