For their latest offering – There Is Delight – Tennessee’s Slow Claw look to expand on the indie garage rock statement they made on their 2009 debut, Grandfather Clocks, and while it sucks to get labeled as “indie” these days, this release sort of embodies the spirit of what the genre was supposed to be. The EP comes on 10” vinyl (complete with a digital download) and touching and feeling this release is just part of actual experience.
Opening track “Money Isn’t Real” starts with Rob Barnes’ airy, yet full vocals reciting the line “Money is not real/‘cause nothing good would lie that much” over Chris Denholm’s galloping drum part, and while the sentiment might not seem to coincide with reality, the three-piece (with Brian Miller on bass) make a reality of their own on this six-song EP.
Set highlight “Conversation A/B” is a thoughtful narrative that finds Barnes using conversation to tell story of a young man confused with the pace he should take with his latest – but most intriguing – love interest by combining what boy and girl would actually say to each other with what they may actually be thinking. The three-and-a-half minute song would serve as the perfect single and definitely qualifies Barnes as one of the scene’s most gifted bards. As if the lyrics weren’t enough to make the song unforgettable, the band harmonizes quite nicely as they sing, “peace with you could sooth the needs/and I would love to sleep again,” and while the lyric looks okay on paper, it comes to life when Barnes delivers it over Denholm and Miller’s rhythmic passage.
Even though “Cobblestone Walk” and “Big E” sort of come and go, closer “Crooked Knees” is more than enough reason to spin this record more than a few times. It is an intricately textured track with subtle acoustic and pinking keyboards playing the foil to the ever-present, pounding bass. By the time you’ve locked into the song’s string part, the 22-minute record has already come to end – begging to played at least a couple more times before you put it away despite Barnes singing “just don’t press repeat.”
