Boasting either the best or worst band name is Central Florida, Orlando’s Yogurt Smoothness really want you to hear every side of their persona on their debut full length – The Diamond Through the Bees. The album’s 14 tracks mix sprawling instrumentals like “Charlie Brown’s Big Day” with more straightforward rock songs like “Whorehouse,” which finds singer-guitarist, Dan K., channeling Kurt Cobain on a screamed chorus while Brian S. provides a rolling drum part and harmonies on what is actually one of the album’s best tracks.
The outfit is merely a duo, but they try to use the studio to expand on their high-energy live set on “Calamity.” The nearly 11-minute jam instantly locks you into the gently stroked intro and then adds mellow organ before it breaks into what seems like three different songs. With crowd banter in the background, the middle passage of the song sounds like it was recorded live, and the track finally closes out with nearly three minutes of a gloriously fuzzed-out guitar part. It’s unclear whether Yogurt Smoothness intended for the song to be broken up by seconds of akward silence, but the disjointed, perplexing nature of “Calamity” epitomizes Diamond’s aura to the core.
The album suffers from being a few songs too long and less stellar cuts like “Image Ditch” fatigue the ears and could lead to listeners skipping over quality tracks like “Hiroo Onoda,” which features a trashing guitar part and a heart-thumping, double bass breakdown that is tucked away at the end of the song.
While their live shows may have a reputation for being highly entertaining, Dan and Brian should’ve take more time refining (and re-mixing) Diamond before releasing it to the public because despite an awesome instrumental track like “Day of the Dinosaur” – with it’s surprisingly appropriate dinosaur roar samples and a well-mixed, well-played guitar arrangement – anchoring a pretty solid record, all anyone is going to remember is that some weird named band from Orlando put out an okay record that they “liked,” but couldn’t stand listening to over and over again.
